How does a stay-at-home mom use social media? It can be a slippery slope. Too much social media and you'll spend all your time staring at a screen instead of interacting with your children or taking care of your home. On the other hand, social media is a great way to keep from feeling isolated from other adults and to find new ideas for making your home run smoother and be a better mother.
So what type of social media is a SAHM most likely to benefit from? Here's what I use most often:
Almost every SAHM I know is on Facebook. Here you can keep up with everyone you've ever known (though would you really want to?). You follow people and as they post updates, those updates show in your feed. You show that you enjoyed reading an update by clicking Like and/or leaving a comment. As something interesting happens in your life that you want to share with your friends, you post an update. Here's a helpful tip: You can assign your friends to one of three categories...Close Friends, Friends, or Acquaintances. Then, when you post an update to your feed, you can designate who sees that post. When I am posting pictures of my children or I'm out of town, I always post to "friends except acquaintances." Facebook is something I limit to my actual friends only, so unless I know you in real life, we won't be friends there. But you can follow one of my two Facebook pages: Essential Oils and Wellness Products and Connect With Books.
Regardless of the fact that I have two bookshelves full of cookbooks and often give in to the siren song of cooking magazines in the check-out line at the grocery store, Pinterest is still my go-to for finding new recipes. On Pinterest, you follow people that interest you (follow me here). As they "pin" to their boards, those pins will show up on your Pinterest home screen. You create your own boards and pin things to it. Imagine the old days when you tore interesting articles and recipes out of magazines and tried to file them away for future reference. With Pinterest, you do the same thing but virtually. Some ideas that SAHM moms would like would be recipes, crafts, DIY projects, kid activities, organization, decorating, etc.
I don't spend much time on Instagram, but my 13 year old is now on it and so I try to monitor it on a semi-regular basis. Many of my friends seem to use Instagram instead of Facebook as their main way to share what's going on in their life. With Instagram, again you follow your friends and when you visit your home page, you'll see their updates. When something fun happens in your life, take a picture and post it to Instagram to share with your friends. In the iPhone app, if you like a picture, tap on it to "heart" it.
The reason I love Twitter is that it's where I go to get news and to get inspired. I follow all sorts of interesting people with a wide variety of interests, so my feed is filled with Christian encouragement, inspiration, essential oils, politics, news, entrepreneur info, etc. I love that Twitter isn't personal (it's similar to Pinterest in that sense). When you read a tweet you find helpful, retweet it so your followers can see it. I'd love for you to follow me on Twitter. If you like a tweet, click the star to Favorite it.
So how do you use social media? Leave a comment and let me know.
